Teddington House

Architecture and interior design firm McLaren.Excell has completed the extensive restoration and extension of an Edwardian riverside villa in Teddington, transforming a near-derelict property into a modern family home. The three-year project reinstated original features, such as the soft red brick façade and chimneys, while introducing contemporary elements. Inspired by a 1920s postcard, the team restored the villa’s original grandeur and added a ground-floor extension, reconfigured interiors, and a terrace, seamlessly blending period details with modern functionality.

Inside, the entrance hall was redesigned by removing a first-floor section to create a light-filled space, with a relocated staircase framing views from the front door to the garden and river. Poured concrete terrazzo floors flow into the extension, paired with Dinesen Douglas Fir flooring in living areas that feature bespoke furniture and carefully defined spaces. The kitchen highlights McLaren.Excell’s craftsmanship with fluted timber cabinetry, a bronze island, and a white marble work surface, evoking an Arts & Crafts aesthetic. Upstairs, exposed timbers and white-oiled finishes preserve the home’s historic character while enhancing light and space, achieving a balance of period charm and contemporary living.
