Starting life as a listed Victorian Barn, Mclaren Excell were entrusted with maintaining the distinctive character of the existing building while contributing to the spacial arrangement and pallet of materials with a complementary design. This was achieved with a series of monumental pods that sit sensitively in the centre of the plan, defining the living spaces and enclosing the service areas, such as boot room, Utility and WC. Carved out of these pods, bespoke stairwells bring the owners up to their private living quarters amongst the eaves.

The material pallet was left intentionally subtle to allow the character of the existing Barn to shine through. Either dark or light materials contrast against the mid-tones of the old wood, bringing their own slight tactility in the tones of raw black steel or cast concrete.
